An Environmental Lien report is designed to help identify a charge, security, or encumbrance upon title to a property to secure payment of cost or debt arising from response actions, cleanup, or other remediation of hazardous substance or petroleum products. Environmental liens date back to 1980 when Superfund was first enacted. Since then, land title records have become an important research tool when looking for historical data as part of an environmental assessment.
